Whilst sports betting was legalised in South Dakota, players are currently only able to place bets in person at once of the land-based casinos in the state.
A ballot proposed in 2022 to bring sports betting to mobile failed, and currently there isn’t any news whether or not change will come to sports betting for South Dakota players. As this is the current situation with online sports betting, it’s also unlikely to see online casinos in the state anytime soon.

South Dakota is an upper Midwestern state, named after Lakota and Dakota Sioux Native Tribes. The state has roughly 890,000 inhabitants, making it the fifth least populated in the United States.
Gold was discovered in 1874 in the mountain range of Black Hills, leading to gold rush fever among speculators. Today, South Dakota’s economy is built on agriculture and the service industry, including tourism, retail, and financial services.
The South Dakota Commission on Gaming regulates casino gambling and pari-mutuels on live horse & simulcast racing. Raffles and bingos, a state lottery, VLTs, and retail sports betting are also authorized activities. Online sports betting and interactive gaming are prohibited.
Authorized table games include blackjack, house-banked poker, player-banked poker, craps, roulette, and keno. Although fantasy contests are not authorized nor regulated, they are tolerated in South Dakota in a way that is not extended to online sports betting. However, no legislative bills have been introduced to formalize this.
The South Dakota Lottery is a government entity offering scratch cards, lottery draw games, and video lottery. Scratch cards start from as little as $1 and can go as high as $20, with prizes of up to $400,000. The South Dakota Lottery is also a member of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). Thus, players from the States can find popular multi-state draws, including Mega Millions, Powerball, and Lucky For Life.
Video lottery in South Dakota has been around for decades, contributing over $2 billion in state revenue over that time. These are available at over 1,350 locations (8,900+ terminals), including corner stores, taverns, liquor stores, grocery stores, legions, and more. VLTs are a big revenue generator for the state, second only to sales & consumption tax.
Authorized forms of charitable gaming in South Dakota include raffles and bingos. Other games of chance are prohibited. Raffles may be conducted by a registered non-profit or charities with tickets sold 30 days before the draw. Statewide raffles require that the South Dakota Secretary of State be notified in writing.
However, the municipality reserves the right to object to the raffle. This is something that is rarely exercised in practice, as charitable raffles tend to be much less controversial than online gambling or casino games in South Dakota.
Pari-mutuel wagering on horse and greyhound races is permitted in South Dakota. This makes South Dakota one of the few states where wagers on greyhound racing are still permitted.
Even so, there are no live greyhound tracks in the state. Given general trends, it seems unlikely that any will open in South Dakota any time soon, particularly if online gambling is given the go-ahead.
South Dakota has two live commercial horse racing tracks including, Aberdeen Horse Racing Track and Ft Pierre Horse Racing Track. The first track has been running for decades, while the latter track started in the 1940s.
Players in South Dakota state that want to participate in a simulcast wagering can visit the Triple Crown Casino in North Sioux City or the Time Out Lounge in Rapid City.
South Dakota Class III tribal casinos and commercial casinos offer slot machines, keno, craps, poker, blackjack, and roulette. Although tribal casinos are located throughout the state on native reserves, commercial casinos are limited to the old mining town of Deadwood.

Charitable bingo & lotteries were authorized in 1970. A few years later, in November 1986, a constitutional amendment led to the creation of the South Dakota lottery, with the bill signed in April of the following year.
On October 16, 1989, the South Dakota Lottery became the first state to introduce video lottery terminals. In just three years, a Bill to prohibit video lottery terminals was rejected by voters in November 1992. The Supreme Court weighed in June 1994 ruling video lottery as unconstitutional.
They were subsequently shut down by court order until voters approved a constitutional amendment in November of the same year, re-authorizing them. Another attempt to repeal video lottery terminals in South Dakota was rejected by voters in 2000 and again in 2006.
The first tribal gaming compact was signed on August 2, 1990, followed by further agreements in subsequent years.
In November 2015, Attorney General Marty Jackle clarified that fantasy sports contests that don’t involve an exchange of money are permitted under South Dakota law.
On November 3, 2020, South Dakotans approved a constitutional amendment (margin of 3:2) to allow sports betting in Deadwood casinos and tribal casinos. Commercial casinos in the former mining town were authorized to offer slot machines and card games in 1988 after a constitutional amendment.
Deadwood’s history dates back to the gold rush in the late 1800s. Other table games like roulette, craps, and keno were later approved on a November 4, 2014, ballot. South Dakota voters have shown a readiness to back betting, if it can be shown to be beneficial to the municipality. This may benefit moves to implement online gambling in the future.
The legal gambling age to play at South Dakota casinos or participate in VLTs, pari-mutuel wagering, or retail sports betting is 21+. Players must be 18 and over to participate in charitable bingo and lotteries.
